How to Trade FOMC Decisions and Press Conferences

An FOMC day is not one isolated announcement. The rate decision, policy statement, economic projections, and chair press conference can each change the market narrative, which is why reversals are common.

Know the event sequence

The policy decision and statement arrive first. On projection meetings, updated forecasts and the policy-rate path add another layer. The press conference follows and can confirm or challenge the market’s initial interpretation.

Separate the rate from the message

A widely expected rate decision may create little lasting movement. Traders often focus instead on forward guidance, inflation language, labor-market risks, balance-sheet policy, and changes in projected rates.

Expect multiple volatility waves

A move after the statement can reverse during the press conference. Avoid treating the initial direction as final. Mark the statement range and watch whether price accepts above or below it after the chair begins speaking.

Use event-specific risk

Liquidity can change between phases. Stops placed inside ordinary intraday noise may be vulnerable, while oversized stops can create unacceptable loss. Define maximum event risk before the announcement and test the approach across several meetings.

Preparation checklist

  • Confirm whether projections are scheduled
  • Read the previous statement themes
  • Mark the statement release and press-conference times
  • Expect more than one directional move
  • Test statement and conference phases separately

Frequently asked questions

Why does the market reverse during the press conference?

Answers can change how traders interpret the earlier statement, especially when the chair discusses future policy or financial conditions.

Does an unchanged rate mean nothing happens?

No. Guidance and projections can be more important than a fully expected rate decision.
