Trading Competition Drawdown Rules Explained
Drawdown rules define how much an account may lose before it is no longer eligible. They protect the structure of a competition, but they can be misunderstood when traders focus only on closed balance and ignore open equity.
Balance and equity are different
Balance reflects closed results, while equity includes unrealized profit and loss. A floating loss can therefore approach or breach a rule before the position is closed.
Daily drawdown
A daily limit measures loss during a defined daily window. The calculation and reset boundary must be read exactly; a new calendar day does not automatically erase an existing open loss.
Maximum drawdown
Maximum drawdown limits total decline according to the contest formula. It may reference starting balance, peak equity, or another published baseline, so assumptions from a different platform can be costly.
Leave operational room
Trading exactly against the limit leaves no room for slippage, rapid movement, or correlated losses. A personal buffer makes the strategy more resilient.
Preparation checklist
- Know the equity formula
- Know the daily reset timezone
- Check open risk
- Allow a safety buffer
- Avoid stacking correlated exposure
