What Is Market Backtesting?

Backtesting applies a defined trading idea to historical market data. A replay tool can hide future candles and move the chart forward step by step, making the exercise closer to the information available in real time.

Start with a testable rule

“Buy when the market looks strong” is difficult to evaluate. Define the timeframe, setup, entry trigger, invalidation, target, and conditions that cancel the trade.

Avoid future-data leakage

Seeing candles that occur after the decision changes how the setup looks. Advance the replay only after recording the decision you would have made at that moment.

Record every valid occurrence

Selecting only attractive examples creates a misleading result. Include winners, losses, skipped trades, and ambiguous cases under the same written rules.

Interpret results as a distribution

Win rate alone is incomplete. Compare average win, average loss, maximum drawdown, losing streaks, sample size, and realistic execution assumptions.

Preparation checklist

  • Write objective rules
  • Hide future candles
  • Test every valid setup
  • Include costs and slippage assumptions
  • Review drawdown and sample size

Frequently asked questions

Does a profitable backtest guarantee future profit?

No. Markets change, data can be biased, and real execution differs from a historical simulation.

How many trades are enough?

There is no universal number; the sample should cover varied conditions and be large enough that a few outliers do not control the result.
