How to Backtest an Economic News Strategy
News backtesting needs more than a list of chart dates. The test must align exact release times, expected and actual values, revisions, and realistic execution conditions.
Create an event sample
Collect comparable releases and record forecast, actual, prior, and revised values. Separate event types because CPI, payrolls, and rate decisions transmit information differently.
Synchronize time correctly
Economic calendars may display local time while market data uses UTC or broker time. A timezone error can place the test on the wrong candle and invalidate the result.
Define reaction windows
Measure the initial seconds or minutes separately from later acceptance, retracement, and session close. A strategy should specify exactly which window it trades.
Use conservative execution assumptions
Spreads and slippage can expand around scheduled events. Stress test results with worse fills and remove the best outcomes to see whether the idea remains credible.
Preparation checklist
- Collect comparable releases
- Verify timezone alignment
- Record forecast surprises
- Define the reaction window
- Stress test execution costs
Frequently asked questions
Can normal candle data test the first seconds?
The candle interval may hide intrabar sequence and execution, so conclusions should match the resolution of the data.
Should all CPI releases be combined?
Segmenting by surprise, regime, and market expectations can reveal important differences.
